The Weight, the newest single from Los Angeles–based band Agriculture, is now available to stream alongside a lyric video. The track appears on the band’s forthcoming full-length The Spiritual Sound, out September 27 on The Flenser.
Leah Levinson, who leads the song, describes it as a portrait of queer life in all its contradictions:
“With ‘The Weight,’ I wanted to represent the people in my life and the sorts of lives we live. The song reports on instances of violence, fear, and aggression as well as moments of love, connection, and support. I wanted to give these moments an appropriate sense of gravity, which, for me, also meant presenting them with the mundanity that surrounds them… There’s something funny about getting on stage and screaming about mundane things but I think there’s something very honest about it too.”
Written during a month when friends were being harassed in public for being trans, queer, or women, The Weight balances these realities with moments of solidarity and joy. It’s a reflection of the band’s larger approach on The Spiritual Sound — music that confronts both the unbearable and the divine.
