"El Perro" began as improvisations inspired by three of Francisco Goya’s Black Paintings- “An Old Man and a Monk”, “The Drowning Dog” and “The Fates.” The improvisations served as a skeleton for the band to build upon, working the material into a more cohesive and cultivated musical statement.
The only text on the record is a quote from Goya himself:
“There is no need for color
There is only light and shadow”
The darkness found in The Black Paintings came to be realized using a musical palette that is less blast beats and crushing guitar chords, and more tolling piano and orchestral percussion. What is captured is the extreme tension in Goya’s work, in an aural environment that resides in unsettling stress without allowing cathartic release.
This is another step down the long strange path that Ehnahre has set out on, distancing themselves a little further from their Death Metal origins, and codifying a unique and singular sound world.
